Management Professor Kyungmin Park’s paper on “When is dependence on other organizations burdensome? The effect of asymmetric dependence on Internet firm failure” has been published in Strategic Management Journal, the most prestigious journal in the field.

The article was co-authored with Professor Seunghyun Lee of the University of Texas at Dallas and Dr. Heejin Mun. Professor Park was Dr. Mun’s doctoral dissertation advisor. Strategic Management Journal is the official journal of the Strategic Management Society and ranked as the top management journal by the University of Texas at Dallas and in the Financial Times’ Top 45 rankings.

The paper measured the extent of Korean Internet firms’ dependency on portals for Web traffic as asymmetric dependence and analyzed its effect on long-term performance and survival. The article focused especially on whether balancing dependence symmetrically on several portals or on a single portal affected the survival of Internet firms differently.

Professor Park said he plans to research how different forms of firms’ resources and trade dependence in a value chain affect survival in different contexts such as the mobile or manufacturing industry.
