North Korea Business Research Seminar Explores Issues in Preparation for Unification

The seminar was held in June in the Iris Hall of Yonsei University’s Sangnam Institute of Management. The YBRI(Yonsei Business Research Institute) and Yanbian University Economic Management Institute are joint sponsors of the seminar, which has been held annually since 2015. It focuses on understanding North Korean business and industry and their future development within the context of preparing for eventual unification. Participants in the Third North Korea Business Research Seminar were told "Koreans are not able to contribute to issues like world peace without premising theunification of the Korean peninsula."

In his opening address, Hyuck Seung Yang, director of the YBRI, a co-sponsor of the event, also remarked, “We hope that this seminar will have an important role in the process of creating a future blueprint for unification."

Zhonglin Li, dean of the College of Economics and Management at Yanbian University, gave a welcoming address, in which he acknowledged the current situation on the peninsula. "I know that the international situation and the situation on the Korean peninsula are in a harsh condition, yet in preparation for the future, I want to contribute to unification through research about North Korean business.”

 

The seminar was divided into two sessions. The first dealt with “Northeast Asia Economic Cooperation,” and the second session was on “North Korea's Business and Industrial Structure.” Each session consisted of presentations by three experts, followed by a Q&A session. Each session was moderated by YSB Management Professor Moo Weon Rhee and  Professor Se Bum Park, associate director of the YBRI.

 

In the first session, Senior Principal Researcher Chang Do Kim of POSRI  and Professor Yeong Ryeol Park of International Business  gave a presentation about the results of Korean companies' investment in China and future plans for cooperation. Then Professor Zhejun Xu of the Department of Tourism Management at Yanbian University, presented the status and future perspectives of the North Korean economic and trade zone, and YSB International Business Professor Joo Young Kwak presented the implications of One Belt, One Road policy and China's international standards of cooperation with North Korea.

 

The second session opened with a presentation on the operational status and governance structure of North Korean companies by Researcher Young Ja Park of the Korea Institute for National Unification and Professor Sung Woo Choi from the Department of Information and Communication of Yanbian University. Dr. Choi explained the development of the information technology industry in North Korea. The session concluded with a presentation by Senior Researcher Seogki Lee of the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, who focused on the hub of North Korea's industries and businesses in the Kim Jong Un era.

 

YBRI Director Hyuck Seung Yang concluded the seminar. "We will continue to hold seminars to connect the big picture for the unification,” he said. “The results of these discussions will become concrete actions when the reconciliation of the North and South becomes a reality.” Zhonglin Li, dean of the College of Economics and Management at Yanbian University, also said, "I hope that these two institutions will select similar research fields and continue their research."

 

The 3rd North Korea Business Research Seminar was held on June 15th at the Yonsei University Sangnam Institute of Management Iris Hall, YBRI (Yonsei Business Research Institute) cooperated with the Yanbian University’s Economic Management Institute. This seminar is held annually since 2015, focus on discussing the understanding of the North Korean industry and companies and the direction of future development for preparation of the unification.

He also said, “We hope that this seminar will be an important role in the process of making a future blueprint for unification." Zhonglin Li, dean of the College of Economics and Management from Yanbian University, gave a congratulatory address, "I know that the international situation and the situation on the Korean peninsula are in a harsh condition, yet for the preparation for the future, I want to contribute to the unification through research about North Korean business together.

Finally, the session was concluded with a presentation by senior researcher Seogki Lee of Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, focusing on the hub of North Korea's industries and businesses in the Kim Jong Un era.
