February Ph.D. graduate Juryum Chung’s dissertation on “Predictive Ability of Unverifiable Fair Value Accounting: Evidence from Asset Impairment” has received the 2016 Best Paper Award for Accounting from the Korean Accounting Association.

After hearing of the award, an excited and joyful Chung was quick to recognize her professors. “I’d like to send my gratitude to my dissertation director, Professor Hoyoung Lee, and assisting directors, Professors Sungkyu Sohn, Wonwook Choi, Jinho Chang and Yongsang Woo,” she said. She also thanked professors in the accounting division, including Professors Kyungtae Lee and Daehee Yoon, who helped her during the examination process.

Since her graduation, Chung has continued her post-doctoral studies at Yonsei University and lectures undergraduate and MBA students.

Her paper explores the impact of recent international accounting standards as well as U.S accounting standards that emphasize fair valuation as the main measurement method to provide more useful information on a firm’s future performance. However, whether users of this information can better predict future profits has barely been studied.
